New London Ledge Lighthouse, Connecticut
The Coast Guard began the process of automating the New London Ledge Light in 1984 when the Fresnel lens was removed from the lantern and replaced with a modern optic. The lighthouse was the last in Long Island Sound to be destaffed in 1987. The final entry in the logbook reads ‘Rock of slow torture, Ernie’s domain. Hell on Earth-may New London Ledge’s light shine on forever because I’m through. I will watch it from afar while drinking a brew’.
