Stratford Point Lighthouse, Connecticut

An active port during the 18th & 19th centuries, Stratford, Connecticut has long had a navigational aid marking the entrance to the Housatonic River. Local lore tells of bonfires lit along the shoreline and later an iron basket in which wood was burned. Eventually the federal government decided to build the 3rd lighthouse on Long Island Sound at Stratford Point.

In 1837 Buddington received a harsh review in an inspection report which stated “This lighthouse is in the worst order imaginable”. The report noted that oil had dripped from the lantern through holes in the floor down to the base of the tower. It also stated “There are the strongest indications of this lighthouse being kept in the most careless, and slovenly manner”. It is a wonder Buddington was retained as the Keeper until his death in 1848.
