Stratford Shoal Lighthouse
In 1837 $10,000 was appropriated to build a lightship to mark Stratford Shoal, also known as Middle Ground Shoal, midway between Long Island and Connecticut. On January 12, 1838 the completed 120 ton Light Vessel 15 was placed into position at the southeastern end of the shoal. The lightship would have a long history of being dragged off-station by foul weather.
