Diamond Head Lighthouse, O'ahu, Hawai'i
A lookout station was first built on Diamond Head in 1878. A Swedish immigrant named John Charles Peterson came to Honolulu when he was 18. He married a local wahine and they had a daughter they named Melika. Unfortunately, his wife passed away 4 months later. Peterson took the new job as lookout reporting the arrival of ships bound to Honolulu via semaphore. He became known as 'Diamond Head Charlie' and held his position for the next 30 years.
