Boothbay Harbor, Maine has been a favorite anchorage of mariners for 300 years. The deep natural harbor is protected from wind and poor weather and early on the need for a lighthouse was recognized. In March 1821 the federal government passed an appropriation for $10,500 to build three lighthouses along the Maine coast. One of the sites selected was on Burnt Island at the entrance to Boothbay Harbor.
