Dyce Head Lighthouse, Maine

The town of Castine, Maine is one of the oldest settlements in the Penobscot Bay area and has a fascinating history. It was first settled by French fur traders in 1614. It’s location at the head of the Bay near the entrance to the Penobscot River provided access to the resources of the vast Maine wilderness. This strategic location in later years led to the establishment of the Dyce Head Lighthouse to aid commerce and shipbuilding.

  • Castine is located at the eastern entrance to the Penobscot River on a peninsula jutting into Penobscot Bay. After the French initially settled the area the called ‘Pentagoët’, the English, led by Thomas Allerton of the Plymouth Colony, displaced them in 1629. The French drove the English out again in 1635; however the English returned the favor in 1654. In 1674 a Dutch ship captured the town for a brief period.
  • In 1676 the Baron de St. Castin took possession for the French and he was rewarded with a grant of a large tract of land. Castin settled the area and married the daughter of the local Tarratine Indian chief Madocawando, ushering in a period of relative peace and prosperity until the English gained control of the area in 1713.
  • During the Revolutionary War the town was still in English hands. One of the worst defeats in U.S. Naval history occurred when American forces, including Paul Revere, were forced to flee up the Penobscot River burning and destroying their ships to prevent their capture.
  • Castine was also occupied by the British during the War of 1812. It was used as an outpost and resupply center. In 1815 after the War, the British took with them the tariff monies they had collected while at Castine and used it towards the establishment of Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • After the War of 1812 things settled down and the settlement grew and prospered. Lumber from the interior was harvested and floated to saw mills down the Penobscot River. Shipbuilding yards sprung up in Castine and nearby towns with easy access to the lumber.
  • In response to this growing trade Congress appropriated $5,000 in May 1828 to to build a lighthouse to guide shipping into the Penobscot River.
  • The site chosen for the tower was a plot of land on the southern side of the Castine penninsula. The land once belonged to John Jacob Dyce, who was a loyalist during the American Revolution.
  • A 42 foot rubblestone tower was erecting surmounted by an octagonal iron lantern. The lantern contained 10 Lewis oil lamps with 14 inch reflectors.
  • On November 5, 1828 the lantern was lit for the first time. The lighthouse displayed a fixed white light 129 feet above sea level.
  • In addition to the tower a 1½ story rubblestone keepers dwelling was built. A former sea captain Jacob Shelburne served as the first Keeper at Dyce Head Light and continued in this capacity until 1841.
  • **Entryway into the tower** An 1843 inspection report during the tenure of Keeper Benjamin Harriman found the tower to be cracked and leaky with rotten woodwork and an unsafe tower stairway. Harriman complained that water had to be carried over 1,000 feet to the dwelling for his family of seven.
  • Complaints were received during this period regarding the location of the lighthouse. Many felt the light should be located closer to the Penobscot River entrance and that the light was blocked by land in certain directions.
  • In 1857 the Light House Board considered discontinuing the Dyce Head Light. Instead in 1858 the lantern received a new 4th Order Fresnel lens and the leaky tower was covered with wooden siding and connected to the dwelling by a covered wooden walkway. The new lens was visible for 17 miles.
  • In 1888 a new barn was built at the Light House Station. The barn is in use today as a garage.
  • In 1891 a 1,000 fog bell was hung at the station to answer ships during thick weather. The bell was rung by hand. Around this time the 1858 wooden sheathing around the tower was removed.
  • A brick oil house was built near the tower in 1895.
  • Just before Christmas in 1929 William H. Wincapaw was piloting his small floatplane along the Maine coast when he was caught in a blinding snowstorm. Low on fuel and disoriented he feared crashing into the ocean when he spotted the light from the Dyce Head Lighthouse. Using the light to fix his position he traveled on to the next lighthouse and the next until he found his way home.
  • **Stairway down to the modern skeletal light** A few days later Wincapaw took to the skies once again carrying boxes containing cookies, books, tea and coffee. He dropped the packages to the light house stations as he flew over them to thank the Keepers and their families for maintaining the lights. Wincapaw received many letters of thanks from the Keepers and he decided to make the present delivery by air an annual tradition. The tradition of the Flying Santa of the Lighthouses has expanded and continues to this day with trips being made throughout New England to Coast Guard families. See www.flyingsanta.org for additional information.
  • During the Depression as maritime traffic in the area decreased it was decided to decommission Dyce Head Lighthouse. In 1937 the light was moved to a 27 foot skeleton tower on a concrete block 475 feet to the south of the old tower. The Keepers house and 100 square feet of land were deeded to the Town of Castine.
  • In 1956 the Dyce Head Lighthouse tower was also turned over to the town. In 1997 & 1998 funds were raised to repair the tower which had suffered damage over the years. A mixture of slurry was injected into the tower walls to repair holes and strengthen the structure.
