Egg Rock Lighthouse, Maine
A decision was made by the Coast Guard to automate the station in 1976. They removed the lantern room so a large aero-beacon could be installed atop the tower. This resulted in Egg Rock being called ‘the ugliest lighthouse in Maine’. In response to the complaints about its appearance, in 1986 the Coast Guard installed a new aluminum lantern and a modern optic. In 1999 the station was converted to solar power.
