Great Duck Island Lighthouse, Maine
In 1984 the Nature Conservancy purchased most of the island to serve as a wildlife refuge for the seabirds of the Maine coast. In 1986 the Coast Guard decided to automate the Great Duck Island Light. A modern optic replaced the 4th Order Fresnel lens which is now located at the Headquarters of the 1st Coast Guard District in Boston. Two of the Keepers dwellings were demolished. In 1988 the Great Duck Light Station was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.
