The shipbuilding trade of Wiscasset, Maine flourished during the early 19th century along the banks of the Sheepscot River. Navigational aids were needed to guide maritime commerce up the river to the growing harbor. One of the aids built for this purpose was the Hendricks Head Lighthouse on Southport Island.
