Monhegan Island Lighthouse, Maine
On June 1, 1962 a group, formed to help preserve the island and its culture named the Monhegan Associates, purchased the Keepers house to establish a museum. Six years later after the exhibits had been developed the museum opened to the public. In 1969 they purchased the old Manana Island 2,500 pound fog bell from the Coast Guard. In 1972 a helicopter was used to move the bell from Manana to its current place in front of the Monhegan Island keeper’s house.
