Monhegan Island Lighthouse, Maine

Lying ten miles off the coast of Maine, Monhegan Island is one of the most historical islands on the east coast. It was home to one of Maine’s first fishing villages and has been visited by explorers since the 1500’s due to the accommodating harbor between itself and Manana Island. The cliffs which rise up to 160 feet made it an important landmark for early navigators. Soon after Maine gained statehood in 1820, the state legislature sent a petition to Congress requesting the erection of a lighthouse on Monhegan Island.

  • In May 1822 Congress responded by appropriating $3,000 for the construction of the Monhegan Island Lighthouse. A 2 acre plot of land atop Lookout Hill (now known as Lighthouse Hill) was purchased for $100 for the lighthouse station. In November 1823 a contract was awarded to Noah Humphrey and Jairus Thayer of Hingham, Massachusetts to build a tower and keepers dwelling for $2,969.
  • The 30 foot tower was built of split stone, 20 feet at the base tapering to 10 feet at the lantern. The whitewashed tower was equipped with an 8 foot iron lantern with 10 whale oil lamps backed with 16 inch reflectors hung on a revolving chandelier to create a flashing light.
  • Approaching Monhegan Island
  • In addition to the new tower a one story stone keepers dwelling measuring 34 by 20 feet was also built with a 7 foot deep cellar.
  • The lights signal was to be red and white flashes. The red color was achieved by affixing sheets of red glass in front of 5 of the lamps; however this caused the chandelier to be off-balance. This was remedied by hanging a 24 pound cannonball from the other side of the chandelier.
  • **Sunset on Monhegan Island from Lighthouse Hill** On July 2, 1824 Keeper Thomas B. Seavey lit the lamp of the Monhegan Island Lighthouse for the first time. Serving as Keeper at Monhegan was considered to be a good posting with a thriving village close by, however hauling supplies up steep Lookout Hill would be extremely difficult.
  • By 1842 the Monhegan Island Light had developed cracks and leaks and the tower had begun to lean. By 1849 the lean became so pronounced the light could not rotate properly. Alexander Parris was contracted to design a new tower for Monhegan Island. Parris has also designed lighthouses at Mount Desert Rock and Saddleback Ledge in Maine.
  • **A view of the Keepers House** Parris drew up plans for a 47 foot tower of granite blocks 18 feet wide at the base and 14 feet wide at the lantern. $6,000 was appropriated for the demolition of the old tower and the construction of the new Monhegan Island Light in 1850. The old illuminating apparatus was moved to the new tower and was lit by Keeper James Wallace.
  • **The fog signal ruins on Manana Island** Due to frequent foggy conditions in August 1854 $3,500 was appropriated to build a fog signal station. Rather than building the fog signal near the light tower, the Light House Board elected to build on Manana Island across the harbor from Monhegan where the signal would be more effective. A 2,500 pound bronze fog bell with a striker activated by a clockwork mechanism went into service on October 15, 1855. In 1870 the bell was replaced by a ten inch Daboll trumpet powered by a steam engine. The bell was used as a backup for the trumpet.
  • **Tower stairs** The lighthouse on Monhegan was connected to the fog signal on Manana Island in 1877 via an underwater telegraph wire. When the lighthouse keeper saw a fogbank rolling in he would notify the Fog Signal Keeper by activating a gong in the Keepers house on Manana.
  • In March 1857 the lighthouse oil lamps and reflectors were replaced with a revolving 2nd Order Fresnel lens. The lens with 8 bullseyes was rotated on brass chariot wheels producing a white flashing pattern. Also in 1857 an Assistant Keeper’s dwelling was built at the station.
  • In March 1861 Joseph Humphrey assumed the position of Keeper at the Monhegan Island Light. Humphrey moved into the Keeper’s house with his wife Betsy and their 11 children. Joseph died in December that year and Betsy was appointed as the new Keeper. Betsy continued to serve as Keeper for 18 years until her retirement in 1880 when her son-in-law Sidney Studley became Keeper.
  • In 1875 a new two-story frame addition measuring 17 by 20 feet was added to the old stone keeper’s house which was found to be in a “very dilapidated state”. A covered walkway connecting the tower with the dwelling was also was also built at this time. In 1892 the original stone keepers dwelling was torn down and replaced with a 17 by 20 foot frame ell built upon the original foundation.
  • In 1892 a 10 by 12 foot brick service room was built onto the entrance to the lighthouse tower. The service room would hold the keepers tools and supplies. In 1893 a brick oil house was built to hold the kerosene fuel for the lantern.
  • In January 1922 the Lighthouse Service eliminated the position of Assistant Keeper at Monhegan Island Light. The displaced former assistant offered to buy the house from the government, however the service decided to demolish the dwelling instead.
  • In 1959 the Coast Guard decided to automate the Monhegan Island Lighthouse. Electric cables were laid for the Fog Signal Station on Manana to allow the personnel there to operate and monitor the lighthouse. The Fresnel lens was disassembled and replaced with a DCB-36 aerobeacon.
  • On June 1, 1962 a group, formed to help preserve the island and its culture named the Monhegan Associates, purchased the Keepers house to establish a museum. Six years later after the exhibits had been developed the museum opened to the public. In 1969 they purchased the old Manana Island 2,500 pound fog bell from the Coast Guard. In 1972 a helicopter was used to move the bell from Manana to its current place in front of the Monhegan Island keeper’s house.
  • Monhegan Island Light Station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1980. In 1995 the Coast Guard installed a VRB-25 optic in the lantern. A solar array to power the optic was erected on the ground just east of the tower.
  • In 1998 under the Maine Lights Program the lighthouse was deeded to the Monhegan Historical and Cultural Museum Association. The Association rebuilt the Assistant Keepers house upon its original foundation to provide more space for its exhibits. In 2009 restoration work was performed on the lighthouse tower including repointing of the granite, repairing the lantern and resurfacing ironwork. The light remains an important aid to navigation and greets thousands of summer visitors from ferry services to the island.
  • "The Monhegan Island Light" (a poem by Tom W. Taylor, former president of the Florida Lighthouse Association written at age 14) There on an isle that is “backed like a whale” A lighthouse beckons with many a tale. Steadfastly around it I often would walk And wished in my heart it really could talk. Hours of childhood beneath it I spent; My heart was full with the comfort it lent. That smiling light showed me how to go; For me, that would always be something to know. ‘Twas located high on a steep rocky hill. Seeing that light would just give me a thrill. That massive glass lens, so strong and bright. Seemed always to bring me to whatever was right. The waves could pound, the storms shout shrill, But I could always count on that light on the hill. And always on the black, darkest night All else would be lost except that strong light. Gray granite rock so hard and strong Caused that lighthouse to last so long. Alas for more than a hundred years She still saves people from shedding tears. You see, the reason the people she saved Was because of the Keepers who worked and slaved. So that the light might ever shine free To save all people like you and me. So here’s a rhyme to that light on the isle, May it always beam forth and make me smile. I love that old lighthouse high on its hill, May it remain forever and continue on still.
