Mount Desert Rock is one of the most isolated and lonely lighthouse stations ever built in the United States. ‘The Rock’ is only 600 yards long and 200 yards wide, it highest elevation is 20 feet above sea level and it lies 20 miles distant from the mainland in the Atlantic Ocean. It is often submerged during storms and tested the mettle of the Keepers and their families over the 150 years it was manned.
