Wood Island Lighthouse, Maine

Wood Island Lighthouse has been shining over the Atlantic Ocean for 212 years. The first Wood Island Light was authorized by President Thomas Jefferson and constructed in 1807 the mark the mouth of the Saco River. The light did not go into service until 1808. The light was a 45 foot wooden octagonal structure sheathed in shingles. The wooden tower only lasted until 1839 when a new rubblestone tower was built.

In 1972 the Fresnel lens was removed and rotating aerobeacon replaced the optic. More importantly, the lantern was removed resulting in a 'headless' lighthouse. This did not sit well with the locals. Due to numerous complaints a new aluminum lantern was fabricated and installed in 1986. An LED light was installed in the lantern in 2012.
