Turkey Point Lighthouse, Maryland

Turkey Point is located at the head of Chesapeake Bay at the confluence of Susquehanna, Northeast and Elk Rivers. When the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was completed in 1829 linking two major waterways, the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment made plans to mark the entrance. In 1831 Congress appropriated $5,000 to build a lighthouse station at Turkey Point.

Over the years Turkey Point Light has been tended by several woman keepers. Elizabeth Lusby was the first woman keeper taking the place of her husband who died in 1844. The same situation befell Rebecca Crouch who became keeper in 1873. Rebecca’s daughter, Georgiana Brumfield took over the duties from her mother upon her death in 1895 and served until 1919.
