East Point Lighthouse, New Jersey
In 1971 the Maurice River Historical Society formed to care for the light by local concerned citizens. Unfortunately in July 1971 a fire set by vandals gutted the lighthouse and destroyed the lantern. The Society in the face of this adversity continued forward and raised monies to rebuild the roof and lantern. A 250mm optic was installed in the lantern and the light was reactivated in 1980. The Society continues to raise monies for the interior restoration of the lighthouse. I toured the interior in the early 90's and they certainly had their work cut out for them! The exterior underwent an extension restoration during the late 90’s.
