Cape May Lighthouse, New Jersey
It blew a pleasant breeze
And the man upon the lookout cried:
"A Light upon the lee!"
They reported to the Captain and
these words did he say -
"Cheer up my sailor lads,
Its the light on old Cape May.”
Located at the southern tip of New Jersey marking the entrance into Delaware Bay, Cape May over the years has been home to 3 lighthouses.
Congress appropriated $5,000 to build the first Cape May Light in 1822. The 70 foot lighthouse was built with bricks barged from Philadelphia atop a stone foundation. A lantern of 15 revolving lamps was installed to distinguish it from the fixed light exhibited by the Cape Henlopen Light in Delaware 12½ miles across the Bay.
