Cape May Lighthouse, New Jersey
It blew a pleasant breeze
And the man upon the lookout cried:
"A Light upon the lee!"
They reported to the Captain and
these words did he say -
"Cheer up my sailor lads,
Its the light on old Cape May.”
Located at the southern tip of New Jersey marking the entrance into Delaware Bay, Cape May over the years has been home to 3 lighthouses.
Mariners complained about the inferior light maintained at Cape May. To address the complaints in 1853 funds were provided to fit the Cape May lantern with a revolving First Order Fresnel lens. Then in 1857 $40,000 was appropriated to build a taller light which would have greater visibility.
