Sea Girt Lighthouse, New Jersey

Built in 1896 the Sea Girt Lighthouse is located on the New Jersey shore at the midpoint between the Twin Lights of Navesink and the Barnegat Lighthouse. This was the last coastal lighthouse with an integral keeper's residence built on the east coast of the United States. Today the lighthouse celebrates its history, serves as a community center and is beloved by the town.

Finally in July 1895 title to a 100 foot square plot next to the entrance to Wreck Pond was secured. Plans were drawn up for the new lighthouse. The structure completed in 1896 would be the last integral lighthouse built on the East coast. In addition to the lighthouse an oil house and a windmill to pump water were built on the lighthouse reservation.

  • As the United States entered the last quarter of the 19th century, the Light House Board embarked on a plan to build lighthouses all along its coasts so a mariner would be in sight of a navigational light at all times. Along the 130 mile coastline of New Jersey there was a large area between the Twin Lights of Navesink and the Barnegat Lighthouse which remained unlit.
  • This led the Light House Board to search for a suitable spot to build a lighthouse to fill in the dark space. In 1886 they requested an appropriation of funds from Congress to erect a new light between the two 1st Order lighthouses. The site selected was Squan Inlet between the towns of Sea Girt and Manasquan.
  • A second request for funds was made in 1888 which led to an appropriation of $20,000 for the Squan Inlet Light Station. Construction was delayed as the Board ran into trouble obtaining title to the selected building site. Five years later a new site was selected in Sea Girt one mile north of the original site, but once again the Board ran into trouble obtaining clear title to the land.

  • **Fire Insurance Company plaque near the front door of the Lighthouse** A 4th Order Fresnel lens was installed in the lantern 60 feet above sea level. The revolving lens had 12 bull’s-eyes and was rotated by a weight system to produce a red flash every six seconds. The weight would descend into a case in the Keepers office on the first floor and remind him to rewind the machinery.
  • **Parlor of the lighthouse on the first floor** Abraham G. Wolf, who had previously served 23 years at the Absecon Lighthouse, was named the first Keeper of the Squan Inlet Lighthouse (the name was changed to the Sea Girt Lighthouse in 1897). Known as ‘Major Wolf’ due to his attained rank during his Civil War service, the Keeper climbed the 42 steps to the lantern to light the Sea Girt lens for the first time on December 10, 1896
  • ** 4th Order Fresnel lens on display on the 2nd floor. In 2001 I saw the lens being auctioned on eBay and told the Lighthouse Committee it would be a great acquisition for the lighthouse. They authorized me to put a $20,000 bid on the lens and we won! It was formerly used in the Crowdy Head Light in Australia** Almost immediately the Sea Girt Light began a battle with erosion. Storm surges and overflows from Wreck Pond began to erode the northeast corner of the property. The lighthouse lawn was sodded and seeded, sandbags were set on the perimeter of the property and the Corps of Engineers visited to find a solution. Eventually jetties were built in the 1900’s to arrest the erosion.
  • **Waiting to climb the ladder to the lantern** Due to declining health Abraham Wolf resigned as Keeper on September 30, 1902. Wolf and his wife moved into a house they had built next door to the lighthouse. Abram L. Yates was appointed the 2nd Keeper of Sea Girt and arrived with his wife and four children. Yates served as Keeper until he passed away from heart failure on May 29, 1910 at the age of 58 and his wife Harriet became the temporary Keeper. Although Harriet applied for a permanent appointment, her request was denied. The reason given was that civil service rules required the transfer of someone who had passed the Civil Service exam and desired the plum lighthouse job.
  • ***View from the lantern room *** On July 28, 1910 John L. Hawkey arrived as Sea Girt’s new Keeper with his wife Viola. The 65 year old Hawkey had spent over 30 years as an engineer aboard lightships, but he decided to swallow the anchor and transfer to Sea Girt in his later years. In late 1913 Hawkey played host to Lighthouse Service Commissioner George Putnam during a surprise visit. The erosion problem continued and in 1915 almost $5,000 was spent to pound interlocking steel plates into the perimeter to secure the property. Keeper Hawkey passed away on March 15, 1917 at the age of 71.
  • Bill Lake, also known as ‘Pappy’, transferred from the Shinnecock Light on Long Island to become the next Sea Girt Keeper. Lake would serve longest of all Keepers at Sea Girt and was accompanied by his wife Edith and their 4 year old son Elvin, better known as ‘Toots’. The lighthouse was a magnet for all the children in Sea Girt and they would play on the beach all day.
  • In 1920 a telephone was installed in the lighthouse. Also in 1920 Sea Girt Light became the first land based station to be equipped with a radio beacon tower. Ships would triangulate the signal with the signals on the Ambrose and Fire Island Lightships to fix their position. Based on the success of the project, the technology was rolled out to locations across the country. In 1924 the lighthouse was electrified and a 300 watt bulb replaced the old IOV lamps in the lantern increasing the candlepower from 11,000 to 100,000. The 1920’s were a time of big changes in Sea Girt as it was developing into a tourist destination. A beach pavilion was built across the street from the lighthouse and the boardwalk was installed.
  • Tragedy struck in July 1931 when Edith Lake passed away. Pappy took a two week leave, and when he returned he gave notice of his intent to retire. Pappy Lake retired after 14 years as the Keeper of the Sea Girt Lighthouse on October 29, 1931.
  • Keeper George Thomas was transferred from the Shinnecock Lighthouse on Long Island to replace Lake. Shortly after Thomas’ arrival the stations radiobeacons were discontinued. While a work crew was taking down the towers they fell over and damaged the porch, oil house and the station fence. Thomas made the necessary repairs. On the night of September 8, 1934 the ship Morro Castle was wrecked offshore in a nor’easter and caught fire off Sea Girt. Local ships responded to rescue the passengers using the Sea Girt Light to find their way back to shore. There were 137 fatalities but over 400 people were saved. Thomas retired from Sea Girt on November 29, 1940 and from that point forward the lighthouse was tended by Coast Guard personnel.
  • At the outbreak of World War II the decision was made to darken the light and the lantern lens was removed. The light station was used to house Coast Guardsmen who performed beach patrols. As the war drew to a close, in September 1944 an automatic aerobeacon was installed atop the lantern.
  • In 1955 the aerobeacon was moved from the lantern to a steel tower built on the lawn as a preparation to closing the lighthouse. After the Coast Guard left the Borough of Sea Girt applied to purchase the property. In August 1956 the lighthouse was purchased for $11,000.
  • For the next two decades the Sea Girt Lighthouse was used as the town library and a community center. By 1980 the building was in disrepair and desperately needed renovation. Repair costs were estimated at over $80,000. The Borough considered selling the property, but citizens held a meeting and formed the Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizens Committee (SGLCC). The SGLCC convinced the Borough to award them a 25 year lease for $1 a year and in return they agreed to fundraise and repair the building.

  • The Sea Girt Light was renovated and furnished in keeping with its historical period. It was opened to the public as a historical attraction and stills serves as a community center. One of the favorite events held at the lighthouse is the annual ‘Signing of the Lease’ party held each August on the lighthouse lawn. • This page is dedicated to the man who showed me the importance of commitment and devotion to the lighthouse cause, Conrad Yauch (right). Conrad managed the Sea Girt Light, did repairs, gave tours, trained docents and handled all the day to day activities. Conrad recruited me in the early '90's to serve as a docent at the Sea Girt Lighthouse through which I learned about Ken Black and the Shore Village Museum, Lighthouse Digest and the U.S. Lighthouse Society. That started me on my lifelong journey learning about lights and their history. Thank you Conrad for everything, I am truly grateful.
