Beavertail Lighthouse, Rhode Island
In 1817 Beavertail Light was the scene of an experiment in lighthouse illumination by David Melville, the son-in-law of the Keeper. Melville setup a system to supply coal gas to the lantern room which would be lit and maintained by the Keeper. The light provided was brighter and cleaner then the whale oil then in use. But political pressure from the wealthy oil interests kept the gas process from being adopted for lighthouses.
