At the confluence of Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay is a point along the Rhode Island coastline where the land juts out for over a mile. This significant landmark is well known to mariners as Point Judith. The importance of lighting this location was realized early as a way to warn of the Squid Ledge which lies a mile and a half off the Point. Many ships came to grief on the rocks of these fog enshrouded waters.
