Due to its strategic location in Narragansett Bay lying at the entrance of Newport Harbor, Rose Island has through the years been a valued military location as well as a lighthouse reservation. Both the British and then the American’s have maintained a military presence on Rose Island. At times, this made lighthouse keeping interesting for the Keepers and their families.
