West Point Lighthouse, Washington

Located in Seattle's Discovery Park, the West Point Lighthouse was built at the base of Magnolia Bluff on the end of a sandy point projecting out into Puget Sound. The light went into operation on November 15, 1881 directing vessels into Elliot Bay. In 1917 with the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, the West Point Light gained even greater importance marking the entrance to this busy waterway.

As early as 1872 the Lighthouse Board recommended that a navigational light be placed on West Point in response to the growing shipping traffic of Seattle. In 1881 Congress appropriated $25,000 towards the project. Six acres of land were purchased in July 1881 and construction of the lighthouse station began.
